A Horizon 2020 Project

What is GEroNIMO?

GEroNIMO is a Horizon 2020 project focused on making animal breeding more sustainable, efficient, and resilient for the future.

Working with chickens and pigs — two of the world’s main sources of animal protein — the project combines cutting-edge genetics and epigenetics research to improve animal health, welfare, productivity, fertility, and environmental sustainability.

Bringing together researchers, breeders, industry representatives, and professional associations across Europe, GEroNIMO promoted collaboration and knowledge sharing to ensure that scientific innovation responds to real-world needs and contributes to a more sustainable food system.

The project run from June 2022 to May 2026, led by a consortium of 22 partners. from research institutes and industry.

Collaborations

GEroNIMO is part of the EuroFAANG platform, a coordinated effort to unravel the connection between the genetic make-up of an animal and the observable physical and physiological traits.

GEroNIMO is part of the EcoGen Cluster led by HoloRuminant. Together, these five projects are redefining sustainable livestock production by exploring innovative breeding strategies, microbiome research, and advanced technologies.
